Become a board member of Indus Community Services

The Board of Indus is made up of dedicated volunteers who are committed to supporting the needs of the communities we serve. It is comprised of visionary individuals from all backgrounds who contribute to our vision, mission and strategic plan.

Indus’s board is a governance board and provides leadership and oversees the activities of the organization. The board does not manage the day-to-day operations of the organization. Directors are asked to support fundraising efforts both personally and within their networks.

  • About the organization

    Indus Community Services is an accredited, non-for-profit community benefit organization that has served local communities for 40 years. The agency is a registered charity supported by its donors and by all three levels of government. Indus, through its professional staff of 140+ personnel, are leaders in providing culturally appropriate services to newcomers, families, women and seniors.

  • General requirements

    • Commit to the vision, mission and guiding values of the organization.
    • Participate in the on-going development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plan.
    • Attend monthly Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting.
    • Serve on at least one Board Committee.
    • Strong networking and communication skills.
    • Have previous experience leading business or social organizations, and/or serving on a Board.
    • Have a strong understanding of the needs of the communities the organization serves.
    • Integrity and commitment to represent the best interests of the organization.
    • Adhere to the organization’s governance policies, procedures & bylaws.
  • Eligibility requirements

    To be eligible all applicants must be or become a member of Indus by March 31st, 2025.

  • Competencies required

    Indus is committed to establishing diverse leadership and seeks Directors that reflect the pluralism of the communities we serve. We welcome diversity and encourage applications from individuals who have competency in one or more of the following areas:

  • Board terms

    As per Indus’ Bylaws, a Board Member position is for a 3-year term with a maximum of 2 consecutive terms. We are currently seeking to fill two vacancies on the Board.

  • Timelines

    March 31st, 2025Applicants to submit their completed Application Form, resume and Membership Form (if applicable) to Indus.
    April 7th - 16th, 2025The Governance Committee meets with the applicants and prepares a slate.
    April 17th or May 15th, 2025Applicants invited to attend a Board meeting as an observer.
    Week of May 19th, 2025Applicants selected for the slate will be notified by the Chair.
    May 27th, 2025AGM notice, agenda, minutes of last year's AGM and recommended slate will be mailed out to the membership. Profile of each applicant on the slate will be enclosed.
    June 16th, 2025Applicants approved for the slate to provide police record search. ***
    June 19th, 2025Approval of the recommended slate/elections to the Board at the AGM.

    *** As part of our screening process, Indus requires all volunteers of the organization to complete a Police Records Search/Criminal Records Search from an authorized Police Service (the city you reside in). Should you be selected for the slate, you will be required to provide the results of the search to the organization by June 16th, 2025.

    Strategic Initiatives-Assists the Board of Directors by undertaking the work needed for Board level initiatives that are strategic in nature.
    -Provides a framework for discussion, oversight, advice and direction on Board identified strategic initiatives.
    -At the Board's choice the work of this standing committee may be distributed through Ad Hoc Committees or Task Groups.
    -Seniors Housing & Long-Term Care Ad Hoc Committee
    -Provide advice and explore seniors housing
    options/opportunities and make recommendations
    -Partnerships & strategic development
    -Fundraising & Communications (project specific)
